LFP chemistry is the safer, longer-lasting option for a home, and it also fits the eligibility rules for the rebates, since the unit needs to be on the Clean Energy Council approved list and capable of joining a Virtual Power Plant. A note on the 13kWh option: the WA battery rebate is capped at 10kWh, so the extra 3kWh does not attract the state subsidy. It can still be the right call if your evening usage is high, but you should know the rebate maths before you decide. We will walk you through it on your quote.
Which Battery Size Is Right for Your Home
Bigger is not automatically better. The right size is the one that covers your evening and overnight usage without paying for capacity you will rarely fill.
Most Perth homes land between 10 and 13kWh. A 10kWh battery sits neatly under the WA rebate cap, which means every kilowatt-hour of storage is subsidised. Go larger and the extra capacity is unsubsidised by the state scheme, so it needs to earn its place on usage alone.
The honest way to size a battery is to look at how much power you draw after the sun goes down, because that is the energy a battery lets you self-supply instead of buying from the grid. A household that cooks, runs aircon and charges an EV in the evening has a very different profile to one that is out until late.
How a Battery Changes Your Perth Power Bill
A battery saves you money mainly by avoiding expensive grid power in the evening, not by exporting cheaply during the day.
The reason is in the rates. On Synergy’s A1 tariff you pay about 32.37 cents per kWh to buy power. But under the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme, Synergy (2026) pays only 10 cents per kWh for energy you export between 3pm and 9pm, and just 2 cents at other times.
So the value sits in self-consumption. A battery stores your cheap daytime solar and lets you use it at night, displacing power you would otherwise buy at 32 cents. Exporting that same energy would earn you a fraction of what it saves you to keep it. That single fact is why storage stacks up for Perth households in a way it did not when feed-in tariffs were generous.
Make the Most of Your Solar: Cooling and Hot Water That Run on Sunshine

The WA rebate requires you to join a Virtual Power Plant on a two-year agreement (Synergy Battery Rewards, a qualifying alternative, or Horizon Community Wave in regional WA). It is a real commitment, but a paid one: activation events can pay around 70 cents per kWh, and after the two years you can opt out.
